hands upThis week I challenged myself to learn even more about the camera and its settings, as for this photo challenge, I had to really play with the settings to capture the shadow in the photo. This photo was taken in the studio in the photography class, I was running out of ideas of where to find shadow outside, so I decided to use a white sheet and the studio lights to my advantage. With my friend Bernice as my hand model, we took lots of pictures. The pictures were simple, it was just some hands creating a shadow against a sheet, but the result turned out a lot more dramatic than I expected. I edited the black point and exposure in this photo, to make the shadows more dramatic and I also made the photo black and white. I am glad I took away the colour from this photo because it really brings out the darkness of the shadow. If I could retake this photo I would take it from another angle, although I like the angle it is at, I would have liked to have seen a different perspective of the photo. I decided to call this photo 'hands up' because the way the hands are in the air resembles the way people position their hands when they are asked to put their hand up.

Emptiness This photo challenge was a learning experience for me, as I have never taken portraits before. This is a photo of my friend Jessica, we were having a lot of fun while eating dinner outside and decided to use each other as models for this challenge. The evening sun was perfect lighting for this challenge as it gave a soft look to the photos while still allowing for dramatic shadows. We had a lot of fun taking photos of each other, and because we're friends it allowed us to both feel comfortable. I really like how the black and white looks on this photo, it is very dramatic and really shows the subject rather than the busy background. I named this photo 'emptiness' because she does not really look like she is showing much emotion, but at the same time she looks almost sad, so (with the help of my model) I thought empty would be a good way to describe this emotion. I don't think I would change this photo if I had the opportunity to,everything about it looks natural and real, which was the object of this challenge, to capture real emotion. Game OverThis photo challenge was interesting, because I learned about mood in photography and how something as simple as colour can affect it. Blue is a fascinating colour, it can be both joyful and depressing, so it was fun to try and achieve both moods in my photos. I took this picture while walking outside on a foggy day. It was kind-of cold and it was late morning, but barely any sun. I am really happy with how this turned out, I think the blue is very nice and adds a dramatic tone to the photo. The grime on the backboard and the red hoop really make the subject stand out and I tried to use rule of thirds as best as I could. I tried to edit out the other basket ball hoop in the corner, but it didn't look that great, I would have liked to have just one in the photo. I named this photo 'game over' because I think the hoop represents happy kids playing basketball, but the blue brings a depressing and mysterious mood to the photo, ending the "game". Les Goûts de ProvenceUnderstanding the difference between still life and regular photos was difficult for me at first, however I was able to gain inspiration from paintings and other photos. Lucky for me, my family had started a small cheese and bread plate, so I used the opportunity to take a photo. I really like this photo because it brings back memories of sunny afternoons in the south of France with family and friends. I am proud of this photo because it reminds me of something that would be painted, and that was my goal for this photo challenge. I did not want to edit these photos too much, because it would take away from the realness of it all, however I did lower the saturation on this photo and I like the way it turned out. If I could retake this photo I would use a different background colour. The colour is from my babe, which the cheese and bread and wine were already on, but I think the wine and the table share similar colours, which I don't like. The name of this photo, 'Les Goûts de Provence', in french means 'The tastes of Provence', and I think it is a perfect fir for this photo because bread, cheese and wine are all common things to eat in Provence. AdventureOut of all the photo challenges I have done, this is definitely one of my favourites. I love animals, and I have discovered that I also love to take photos of them. Of course, I already have a lot of pictures of my cat, Stanley, but for this photo challenge, I wanted to try something different, so I put on his harness and leash and let him explore. My cat loves going outside, and I thought this would be a good opportunity to photograph him. I think this photo is really neat because in a way it documents his "wild side". His fur is patterned because his breed comes from the Asian Leopard Cat, and by letting him outside, it shows the jungle cat in him. If I could retake this photo I would try to experiment with other angles, a lower angel to make him look really big could have been a nice photo. Of course, i would have loved to have him without the leash, but he's just getting used to the outdoors and being the scared and excited cat he is, he would probably run off. I named this photo 'adventure' because you can really see how excited and curious Stanley looks on his little adventure. Classic Collection I really enjoyed taking photos for this photo challenge because it allowed me to go around in my house and discover all the collections of things we had. I am part of a musical family, everyone plays at least two instruments, and music is almost always playing. We have so many CDs in our basement, I would have used them all for this photo but there wouldn't be enough room! I decided I wanted this photo to represent something important in our family: music. One thing I found challenging about taking this photo was getting the "bird's eye view" angle. It was very difficult to move around the light I was using and not get a shadow that covered the CDs. I decided to call this photo 'classic collection' because the collection of CDs I used in the photo re all classics from different r the same decades. There is Meatloaf, Tom Petty, Great Big Sea, and even an album of songs that I used to listen to when I was really young. If I were to take this again I would try this from a different angle because I don't really like the angle I used for this particular photo. I really like how the colourful CDs contrast against the white background/ Citrus In this photo challenge I had a lot of fun experimenting with the contrast of colours in my photos. It was my mom who gave me the idea to use fruits as my subject, and a lemon, lime, and orange seemed like the perfect idea. I tried to use the rule of thirds in this photo to line up the fruit to look nicer, however I think I went a bit over the line on the grid. I dint have very good lighting for this photo, and I had to brighten it in Photoshop. If i could go back to when I was taking this photo I would experiment with different lighting and look at the different results. I'm really happy with the colours in this photo, and I like how the white background contrasts with the vibrant colors of the fruit. I decided to name this photo 'Citrus' because of the beautiful colours of the fruit. Urban WanderingThis weeks challenge was to find letters in objects or things around you, and have them spell a word that they relate to. With my Pathfinder group, we took a trip downtown, getting to certain checkpoints only using paper maps, and we were to stay at a hostel overnight. I thought this trip would be a great opportunity for me to get photos of the city, and complete this challenge. I had a really fun time and, although it was very hard, I managed to get all the letters I needed. I named this photo 'Urban Wandering' because I took all these photos that spell out "Vancouver" while exploring and wandering around the city. I think some of these photos could have had much better quality, as I had to take some of them on my phone, which does not have the best camera. I also wish the lighting was better for the "C" and the "r". I am really proud of the fist "v" because I think the bikes also really represent Vancouver, and the lighting in that photo is nice. Overall I had a really fun time taking this challenge and it allowed me to explore the city around me in a unique way. Tiny CrystalsI took this photo on one of the last days that snow still covered the ground where I live. This week's challenge was difficult because there was only snow for a few days, but I still managed to take all the photos I needed. I took this picture outside my school in the morning. The ice was beginning to melt on the leaf but it was still very cold. I named this picture 'tiny crystals' because of the little crystals of snow visible on the edge of the leaf. I like how the colour of the bright leaf contrasts with the dark and dull background, I also like how just the leaf, the subject of the photo, is the only part in focus. I think it is obvious that I needed to use flash in the photo, and I don't really like how bright it is. I think this photo fit in well with the 'Jack Frost' challenge because you can see the little bits of snow and ice that had fallen onto, or formed in the leaf. A Drop of JoeWhen taking my action photos I discovered how difficult it can be just to take a simple action shot. My dad always appreciates a good cup of coffee, so with all the coffee machines and such in my house, a cup can be made at anytime. I decided to use our machine to my advantage to get a great action shot. I named this photo 'A Drop Of Joe' because of the little droplets of coffee dripping into the cup. I think this is a really nice picture, I love how you can see the little droplets of coffee forming and dropping into the cup. The lighting in my kitchen is not so great, so I did have to use the flash for this photo, so I think the lighting could be better. In this photo I think it is really nice that only the coffee falling from the machine is in focus, it directs the viewer right to the subject and rally allows it to stand out. |
